Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm

     Hard by a great forest dwelt a poor wood-cutter with his wife and his two children. The boy was called Hansel and the girl Gretel. He had little to bite and to break, and once, when great dearth fell on the land, he could no longer procure even daily bread.

     Now when he thought over this by night in his bed, and tossed about in his anxiety. He groaned and said to his wife, "What is to become of us? How are we to feed our poor children, when we no longer have anything even for ourselves?"

     "I'll tell you what, husband," answered the woman, "early tomorrow morning we will take the children out into the forest to where it is the thickest. There we will light a fire for them, and give each of them one more piece of bread, and then we will go to our work and leave them alone. They will not find the way home again, and we shall be rid of them."

     "No, wife," said the man, "I will not do that. How can I bear to leave my children alone in the forest? The wild animals would soon come and tear them to pieces."

Music on Academic Development

MUSIC AND ACHIEVEMENT

There have been a number of studies done on the effect of music on academic development. It has been shown that high school music students have higher grade point averages than non-music students in the same school. At Mission Viejo High School in Southern California in 1981, the overall grade point average of music students was 3.59 and for non-music students the overall grade point average was 2.91. This same study also found that 16% of the music students had a 4.0 overall grade point average and only 5% of the non-music students had a 4.0 overall grade point average.3 A study of graduates of the New York City School of Performing Arts found that 90% of them go on to college.4

Rees feels that involvement in high school music programs helps students develop the skills necessary for a variety of occupations. She states: "Successful music students tend to possess the qualities and skills that are generally considered essential to employers in business, education and service organizations."5 She also recognizes that music education assists students in improving their writing, communication skills and DOES improve analytical skills. Rees further states that to be successful in music, takes a great deal of self-discipline and notes that "music majors have the highest SAT scores in all areas." 

Fred Hargadon, former Dean of Admissions for Stanford University, in a 1983 interview with Stauffer said, "We look for students who have taken part in orchestra, symphonic band, chorus and drama. It shows a level of energy and an ability to organize time that we are after here. It shows that they can carry a full academic load and learn something else. It means that these particular students already know how to get involved and that's the kind of campus we want to have."

Idiom Corner, where people learn idiom, proverb, phrases, phrasal verb and quotes

Idiom Corner

This is an English expressions community where people learn idioms, proverb, phrases, phrasal verb, and quotes. We need to make an account first to use all facility in this website. If we already become a member we can explore the quizzes, expressions practices, and other activity. For quizzes, there are three levels of quizzes, easy, intermediate, and advance level. There will be about 10 to 20 question in a level and every level has a different amount of question. For example, there are 10 questions in easy level. We need to answer at least 90% correct to be able to proceed to the next level. Every activity we done we will get points. So far the highest points is 14, no one has reached more that that.

Beside quizzes there are also practices by suggest new expressions or make a new example for one of the expressions. When we posted new suggestion of expression the other users will review it and they can either approve or decline it. If they approve it we can get 2 points but if they don’t we will not get any score. We can also post comments on another user’s suggestion. Users with the highest score will get to be featured.

To start using this website we need to make an account. There are two kinds of learner, super learner where we need to pay about 23 dollar for 3 months, 35 dollar for 6 months or 59 dollar for 12 months and there is also free account fro an ordinary learner. Children can learn in a fun way and also make friends with other users. There are numerous interactive and interesting missions, education games and songs to learn. It is an interesting way to learn English for children. Children will learn best when they immersed in the language.

He was in demand in drawing-rooms, sought after for valses, and in men he inspired that smiling hostility which is reserved for vital and attractive rivals. He had been suspected of several love-affairs of a sort calculated to create a good opinion of a youngster. He lived a happy, care-free life, in the most complete well-being of body and mind. He was known to be a fine swordsman and a still finer shot with the pistol.

"When I come to fight a duel," he would say, "I shall choose pistols. With that weapon, I'm sure of killing my man."

One evening, he went to the theatre with two ladies, quite young, friends of his, whose husbands were also of the party, and after the performance he invited them to take ices at Tortoni's.

Ellen the eagle first suspected that she needed glasses the day that she swooped down out of the sky and grabbed a small lawn chair to carry back to her hungry children. When she arrived back at her nest, perched high atop a cliff, her oldest son said, somewhat sarcastically, "Great. Another lawn chair for breakfast. Just what we need."
Her husband, Ed, was more forgiving. He gently picked up the lawn chair with his beak and moved it over to the flat, back section of the nest. Then he sat down in the lawn chair, folded his wings comfortably behind his head, and lay back.
"Honey, you might want to go and have your eyes checked one of these days," Ed said. "It's easy enough to do, and only costs a mouse or two."

"I've been meaning to get my eyes checked," replied Ellen, "but you know how it is. Every day it just seems that there are new mice to catch, new things to do for the nest, and new nature shows to be in."
"True, the nature shows do put the dead mice on the table, but they take away from the hunting and stalking I really like to do."
"I'll put it on my calendar as something to do next week. Although, I've got to say, I would feel a little self-conscious wearing glasses out in public. What would the other eagles say?"

E-learning and the benefits

What is E-learning? That question might pop into our head when we consider about how education have improved through technology. E-learning, as almost everyone knows is electronic learning. It means that the learning environment has joined together with the development of technology that create new environment which utilizing technology and Internet connection. It emphasize on learning along with technology and how to use and benefit from it. There are many definition of e-learning that defined by some expert but I found in a book written by Bryn Holmes and John Gardner where they defined e-learning simply as online access to learning resources, anywhere and anytime. Another definition of e-learning refers to courses that given online rather than having a classroom meeting. As we know in day-to-day activity we are now routinely technology-based, for example using cell phone, mp3 player, laptop, and many electronic devices which are very crucial for our daily activity. E- Learning offers new opportunity for both teacher and student to enrich their learning experiences through new environment, which called virtual environment. Teachers and student can search as many as information they need for the learning process through Internet and also joined to some virtual classes that can give them new experience and information. Beside that, they can also share information and discuss things with another people who might be having different experience. To be able to have that kind of learning process learners must have the ability to use the technology and also the responsibility in using it, if not it will be meaningless. there are many benefit of e-learning that I can't mention it all but for me, I can mention some benefit that i feel it myself in my learning process. the first is, it helps me on doing my assignment. I can search for many resources that relevant to the subject i learn. Second, it gives me opportunity to share ideas and discuss things with other people in another part of the world, let say the native speaker of English because I'm major in English. I can interact with them through many social media like Skype, twitter, Facebook and email. Third, I can express myself through writing in a blog and other people can give comment on it, so that I can improve myself in writing. maybe other people will get the same benefit as I get and maybe they get more benefit than mine because every people has their own purpose of learning. 

Film Project

another film project that makes me going crazy, but it still fun somehow. We only got 2 weeks to make it and after I saw another film from another group I got many ideas in my head. We're supposed to submit it in Friday but my lecturer said she will give us additional time until Monday. So, we only have two days to revise our film that actually good enough but we want it to be better. who knows we can get A if we revise it. After we finish it I think all of  the student will watch it together. it can be embarrasing but if we make it good it will give a good impression

mixed in mind

ano ne... that is the word that Hani-senpai always say when he want to say something. I wonder what it means. does anyone knows? tell me if you know. Hani-senpai is so cute. The way he talk, his voice, his act, and also his thought is unpredictable. He can be looked like an innocent boy but he isn't. he know many things that many people might just pass on.
I don't know what I want to write actually, but I just want to write something so I end up describing about hani-senpai. He's one of the character in the anime called Ouran High School Host Club. That's my new favorite anime for now but I still like One Piece and Naruto of course. I wonder about the new episode about those two anime.... haaa...nevermind, I can ask my friend who regularly download it. Back again to Ouran, this anime is so funny, they like to do stupid things ,but beside those many stupid things they have done so much they also has another way of thinking that sometime I think it's a wise thinking for high school student.
actually I have so many thing I want to write last week but I haven't got any chance to write. first. many assignment waiting for me to start doing it. second, the internet connection was soooooo bad, even just to open Google.com. third, I ran out of pulse. Hahahaha.... daebak... and this week I don't know what to do.. I'll write again when I get any idea... adios...

great damn monday

from the first time I started the day I already felt bad and it is bad. I got up a bit late and I need to took my sister's lunch... Hahhhhh... what a tired thing to do in hot days. The sun was really hot, I felt like I was in an oven. That day I was supposed to have lunch with my old friends but my motorcycle chain suddenly broke, so I couldn't make it. I took my motorcycle and walk to the repair shop. thanks god I brought my wallet with me but I spent all my money in the end just to pay for it. I have no money, no pulse, no power, what can I do ........
But I felt a bit pleased actually, because I couldn't make it, I mean the lunch. there's one person I don't want to meet there. he's very..... the point is he makes me uncomfortable. he tried to call me at that time but I never answer. not because I don't want to answer it but I was riding my motorcycle so I couldn't.

it started with the balloon

thought it will be fun, and it is... in the beginning
the schedule said that that it will start at 8 o'clock. well.... you know Indonesian right, rubber time, and finally it started around 8.30. at the beginning I felt just fine with the atmosphere where all experts and student from some universities in Pontianak and also around West Kalimantan gathered in that place. and who knows one of the speaker would be THT PRSN. he's the father of someone whom I don't like. she's a big mess in the time of my high school. I don't want to talk about her. just in case someone would read this and tell her about it. Ha. in the first half if the session I already felt bored so I started to draw things which come in my mind. utin who sst beside me asked me to draw a balloon in her note book. well I did that. it come out pretty good. 
after this picture I keep drawing another picture till the end of the seminar. and take pictures of all that. though I only get little thing from that seminar but I can express it through drawing. the art that I always admire but I never able to do well. hope next time I can draw better and make a good drawing.

Drawing in Lesson

Thursday, 14 march 2013, I.... subject. during the class I can't concentrate on the lesson given. The weather was totally hot and I felt like I was in an oven. So.... I just drew this thing in my binder while he's talking about that subject and anything about his story. sometimes I do join the conversation when I got interested in the topic. hahaha... that's just what happened to me on that day, but it can be different in another day.

about the drawing, first I made a picture of peaceful Gary or Gary oppa or his real name is Kang Gary. I got the inspiration from my lecturer because I just can't merely believe what he told me about all his story. maybe some of them are right but I don't know which one should I believe. when he told the whole class about his story(past experience) everyone can just laugh and seems accept it but I just make a peaceful face like Gary did in almost all his photograph in runningman. and I remember the episode when Dong Bang Shin Ki (DBSK) become the guest and they drew Gary's facial expression as one of the riddle. that's just so funny because everyone knows it. as for the balloon I just suddenly think of language and art division in BCLC and about art, drawing, balloon, flowers, and it just flew in my mind so I just draw it. the result isn't that bad. I think it's pretty good for someone like me who can't draw good things. For the thumbs up and THE LAST CHAMPION words are ideas from my friend Utin and Laila. Utin told me that the balloon was good so she asked me to make a thumbs up there and Laila was talking about the last champion in runningman so I just wrote it there. Later on I will make another drawing and post it here..... just wait it... :)
